How Often Should You Change Your Henry Hoover Bag?

It's the question every Henry owner eventually asks, usually while peering into the machine and wondering whether the bag inside is fine or quietly throttling the suction. The honest answer is that there's no single magic number — but there is a sensible rule of thumb, a few clear warning signs, and one factor most people never think to check.

The simple rule: two-thirds full, not bursting

A vacuum bag isn't like a bin liner you fill to the brim. As dust packs in, it lines the inside of the bag and starts to block the very pores that let air pass through. Air is what carries the dirt; restrict the air and you restrict the cleaning. By the time a bag looks visibly full, your Henry has already been working harder than it should for several sessions.

So the practical rule is this: change the bag when it reaches around two-thirds of its capacity. You don't need to weigh it or cut it open — a quick look and a gentle squeeze tells you most of what you need to know. Firm and rounded means it's time. Soft with obvious give means carry on.

A realistic schedule for a typical home

• A standard home, light to normal use: a full 9-litre bag will usually last six to eight weeks of regular vacuuming.

1. Weaker suction. The most obvious sign. If the head no longer grips the carpet or struggles to lift crumbs, the bag is likely choking airflow.
2. A higher-pitched motor. When air can't get through, the motor revs faster and the note climbs. That whine is the machine straining.
3. A musty or dusty smell. A full bag holds onto odours and can push fine particles back out through the exhaust.
4. The bag feels firm and rounded. Open the machine and give it a squeeze. No give means no room.
5. Dust escaping the exhaust. If you can see or smell fine dust coming out the back, the bag is overfull and filtration is failing.

Here's the factor almost nobody checks. How often you change your bag depends enormously on how big the bag actually is — and not all "compatible" Henry bags are the same size. • Empty the floor of large debris before vacuuming — picking up a big lump of something just wastes bag space.
• Check the filters too. A clogged bag often means a clogged motor filter; clean or replace it when you change bags.
• Don't reuse a bag by emptying it. Henry bags aren't designed for it, the filtration degrades, and you risk dust blowing back into the motor.
