Are Compatible Henry Bags as Good as Genuine Numatic?

It is the question every Henry owner eventually asks. Genuine Numatic bags cost more — sometimes a lot more — and the box looks reassuringly official. So before you spend, it is worth knowing: is a compatible bag genuinely as good, or are you trading quality for a few quid saved? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which compatible you buy.

What a vacuum bag actually has to do

Strip away the branding and a Henry bag has three jobs. It has to seal cleanly onto the inlet so dust goes into the bag and not into the motor. It has to filter — trapping fine dust while letting air pass through, which is what keeps suction up. And it has to hold a sensible volume of dirt before it needs changing. That is the whole list.

None of those three jobs require a part to be made in Numatic's own factory. They require the right materials, the right dimensions and decent quality control. A compatible bag built to the same specification performs the same. A compatible bag built down to a price does not — and the difference shows up in exactly those three areas.

Where good compatibles match genuine

On the things that matter day to day, a well-made compatible bag is hard to tell apart from the genuine article:

• Filtration. Genuine Numatic bags use a multi-layer construction. A quality compatible uses the same multi-layer microfibre approach — which actually filters fine dust better than the older single-ply paper bags many people grew up with.
• Seal and fit. The inlet collar is a standardised shape. A properly made compatible clips on exactly like the original, with no gaps and no dust escaping.
• Compatibility. Genuine and quality compatible alike are built to the NVM-1CH (604015) standard, so they fit the whole Henry family — HVR160, HVR200, HVR240, HVR250, plus Hetty, Harry and James.

This is the part the premium price does not buy you. A multi-layer microfibre compatible from a brand that cares about its product filters and seals just as well as the one in the official packaging.

Where cheap compatibles fall down

Here is the catch, and it is the reason "are compatibles as good?" has no single answer. Most compatibles on the market are not built to the genuine specification. They are built smaller.

Numatic designs every Henry around a full 9-litre bag. To shave material costs, the typical third-party bag is only around 6 litres — a third smaller — while still fitting the inlet and still claiming to be "compatible." The box rarely mentions litres, so you would never know until you noticed the bag filling up faster than you remember. So when someone says a compatible "wasn't as good as genuine," what they usually experienced was a smaller bag — not worse filtration or a worse seal. They downsized without realising, and blamed the word "compatible" for it.

How to choose a compatible you won't regret

You do not need to default to genuine to get genuine-level performance. You need to buy the right compatible. Four checks:

1. Confirm the capacity is 9L. If a listing doesn't state litres, assume it is the smaller size — sellers advertise 9L when they have it.
2. Look for multi-layer microfibre, not single-ply paper, for better fine-dust filtration and fewer tears.
3. Check the part reference. Genuine-spec compatibles cite NVM-1CH or 604015; the bargain-bin ones often invent their own code.
4. Read the reviews for the boring details — do they hold their shape, seal cleanly and last a sensible time? That tells you more than the headline price.

So — as good as genuine?

A full-size, multi-layer compatible? Yes, in everyday use it does the same three jobs to the same standard, at a lower price. A shrunken 6-litre compatible? No — not because "compatible" is a dirty word, but because you are quietly buying a third less bag. The brand on the box matters far less than the specification inside it.
