Why Your Henry's Losing Suction (And What to Do About It)
Your Henry used to grip the carpet so hard you could feel it tug. Now it drifts across the floor, leaves grit behind, and makes that thin, straining whine. The instinct is to assume the motor is on its way out. It almost never is. Henry motors are famously durable — plenty run well past a decade. When the suction drops, the cause is nearly always something interrupting airflow, and every one of the usual suspects is fixable in a few minutes with nothing more than your hands.
Start with the bag — it's the usual culprit
Before you dismantle anything, check the bag. A vacuum bag is also the machine's main filter, so as it fills, air has less and less room to pass through. Long before it looks completely stuffed, a filling bag will strangle suction and leave the motor working harder for less.
This is where bag size quietly matters. Henry-family vacuums are engineered around a full 9-litre bag. Most "compatible" bags on the market are only around 6 litres — a third smaller — so they hit the airflow-choking point far sooner and drag your suction down between changes. Two quick things to check:
- Is the bag more than about two-thirds full? Swap it for a fresh one and test again before doing anything else.
- Is the bag seated properly, with its cardboard collar pushed fully onto the inlet? A bag that has slipped off its seal lets air bypass it entirely and kills suction instantly.
Hunt for a blockage
If a fresh, well-seated bag doesn't fix it, something is blocking the airway. Henry has a long path — floor head, wand, hose, and the machine inlet — and a blockage anywhere along it has the same choking effect. The classic offenders are a stray sock, a wad of compacted hair, or a marble that a small person posted into the tube.
Work backwards from the floor:
- Detach the floor head and check the neck for hair, threads, and packed fluff.
- Separate the two metal tubes and look straight through each one.
- Pull the hose off the machine and hold it up to the light — or drop a coin in one end. If the coin doesn't fall straight out, something is stuck.
- Check the inlet on the machine itself, where the hose connects.
A long broom handle or a straightened wire coat hanger clears most hose blockages. Never force anything sharp down the hose that could pierce the wall — a punctured hose leaks air and creates a new problem.
Clean or replace the filters
Henry has a filter you can't see from the outside: a round pre-motor filter that sits beneath the bag chamber, guarding the motor against fine dust. If it's caked, airflow suffers even with a brand-new bag in place.
Lift out the bag and you'll find the filter seated over the motor housing. Tap it out over a bin, or give it a gentle rinse and let it dry fully — a full 24 hours — before refitting. As a rule, clean it every few bag changes and replace it once or twice a year depending on how hard the machine works. And if a bag has ever split on you, check the filter straight away: it will have taken the fine dust that the bag should have caught. That, incidentally, is another reason a properly sealed, full-size bag earns its keep.
Look for air leaks
Suction depends on the whole airway being sealed. A pinhole in the hose, a cracked connector, or a lid that isn't clipped down flat all let air sneak in where it shouldn't — so the machine pulls against the leak instead of against the floor. This one is easy to miss because nothing looks blocked; the vacuum simply feels weak everywhere.
- Run a hand along the hose while the vacuum is running and feel for air escaping through splits or cracks.
- Check that the hose ends and the tube joints are pushed fully home, not half-seated.
- Make sure the lid seal is intact and the two clips are properly latched down.
When it actually is the motor
Occasionally it really is the motor — but the symptoms are different. A failing motor tends to run hot, smell faintly of burning, cut out on thermal overload after a few minutes, or make a grinding rather than a straining sound. If you've worked through the bag, blockages, filters and leaks and the suction is still poor, that's the point to book a service.
